eDPI Calculator

How does the eDPI calculator work?

The eDPI (effective dots per inch) calculator is used by PC gamers around the world to help determine the perfect sensitivity settings for any game. eDPI is calculated by multiplying DPI by your in-game sensitivity. For optimal performance, you should research the most commonly used DPI and in-game sensitivity used by professionals of the specific game you have chosen, then try to match your eDPI to those players. However, it may be more beneficial to use settings which you are comfortable with.

What is eDPI?

Effective dots per square inch or eDPI is the product of your dots per square inch (DPI) multiplied by your in-game sensitivity setting. This value, whatever it may be, is useful for finding a matching overall sensitivity between many players. For example, two players may have different DPI settings, with one having a higher or lower in-game sensitivity setting which makes both their eDPI identical!

A brief history of the computer mouse

The computer mouse we know and love today began its development in the early 1960s by American engineer and inventor Douglas Engelbart who was employed at the Research and development company SRI International. Douglas was exploring the interactions of humans and computers, and the chief engineer at SRI then built the first computer mouse prototype in 1964. The modern design with many buttons soon followed!

Input fields explained

Before using it, it may be helpful to understand each input field:

  • DPI (dots per inch):

Enter your DPI setting, commonly set between 400-3600.
  • In-game sensitivity:

Enter your in-game sensitivity setting. For some games, this is just a slide bar, however, the exact value number can be found in the game files.

Understanding the results

Once the required fields have been entered and the "Calculate" button has been clicked, the eDPI calculator will provide an answer.

Below is a helpful example and demonstration of how the eDPI calculator functions:

eDPI is calculated by multiplying DPI by your in-game sensitivity:

        With a DPI of 400
And an in-game sensitivity setting of 1.8

        400 X 1.8
        eDPI = 720

This value is known as your eDPI which represents exactly how many dots per inch your mouse movements are covering in-game!
